Starting Monday, these dedicated individuals will finally gain access to the evacuation zone, a critical opportunity to tend to the animals they were forced to leave behind.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen has swiftly implemented a specialized pass system, specifically designed to facilitate the relocation of livestock. Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham confirmed this pivotal development, acknowledging the immense pressure faced by agricultural producers during such a harrowing time. Furthermore, residents concerned about missing pets are urged to contact the regional district’s Emergency Operations Centre for assistance.
Crucial Access for Summerland Farmers and Growers
The urgency extends beyond livestock. Growers are also making impassioned pleas to enter the evacuated areas, desperately hoping to harvest their ripening fruit before it’s too late. The regional district is prioritizing these requests, understanding the economic and emotional toll of potential crop loss. Neal Vander Helm, owner of Laughing Coyote Orchards, a nursery with some 10,000 trees and pots, recounted the harrowing experience of fleeing the rapidly advancing Bald Range fire. His primary worry? The fate of his intricate irrigation system.
“My farming community in Summerland, we’ve been staying in touch through messages and phone calls,” Vander Helm shared with Global News, highlighting the tight-knit support network. “We’re passing along what we know, from map resources to what people in the fire department, who are also Summerland farmers, have seen.” This collective effort underscores the resilience of the community. With power outages since Friday, the critical concern for many like Vander Helm is whether irrigation systems, vital for the survival of their plants, are operational.
The scale of the disruption is immense: 451 properties remain under evacuation order, with another 1,065 under alert within the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. The entire District of Summerland, encompassing 5,688 properties, is currently under an evacuation order. An additional 38 properties on the Penticton Indian Band are also evacuated, with 1,082 under alert. This access for Summerland farmers marks a small but significant step towards recovery.
