Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh recently visited prominent education reformer and activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, sources confirmed. The meeting comes just after the activist’s high-profile transfer to the private facility, a move mandated by the Delhi High Court for specialized medical attention.
Wangchuk, who had been receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, was discharged earlier in the evening and moved to Medanta Hospital for advanced care. He arrived at approximately 7:30 PM in a high-security ambulance and has been admitted to ICU 8. His treatment is now overseen by Dr. Sushila Kataria, a renowned internal medicine specialist.
High Court Mandates Sonam Wangchuk’s Hospital Transfer
The decision to transfer the activist stemmed from a crucial Delhi High Court order. This judicial directive stipulated his immediate relocation from Safdarjung to Medanta, ensuring a dedicated team of medical professionals with specific expertise could monitor his health. Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, had actively approached the court, advocating for his transfer to a hospital of his preference. The court underscored that this move was essential to uphold his fundamental rights as guaranteed by Articles 19 and 21 of the nation’s governing framework.
Safdarjung Hospital confirmed Sonam Wangchuk’s discharge at 6:40 PM, with his vital parameters stable at that time. However, the hospital noted the persistence of pancytopenia and a serum potassium level of 3.4 mEq/L, providing all relevant medical records to the Medanta team for seamless continuity of care. Sonam Wangchuk began an indefinite fast on June 28, protesting alleged examination irregularities, which led to his initial hospitalization.
