KARIBA, ZIMBABWE – A tragic maritime disaster has rocked Zimbabwe, as authorities confirm the death toll from the devastating capsized ferry on Lake Kariba has tragically soared to 68. Twenty-two additional bodies were recovered from the vast lake on Saturday, painting a somber picture of the country’s deadliest such incident.
The ill-fated vessel, a passenger ferry, overturned last Tuesday amidst ferocious winds on Lake Kariba, a colossal man-made reservoir straddling the border with Zambia. Investigators suggest a critical factor in the catastrophe was severe overloading; the boat, authorized for a mere 90 passengers, was reportedly crammed with 114 adults, five crew members, and an unconfirmed number of children. Eighteen innocent children are among those confirmed dead.
The Rising Toll of the Kariba Boat Accident
Rescue operations, although challenging, continued with grim determination. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Muchechesi, commander of the boat regiment spearheading the search, expressed cautious optimism. “So far today we have managed to take 22 bodies. We are confident that we will manage to retrieve all the bodies,” he stated.
Meanwhile, scenes of heart-wrenching grief unfolded at the district hospital in Kariba, the lakeside town. Hundreds of families, their faces etched with anguish, gathered to identify their missing loved ones. A public memorial service was held Thursday, 280km north-west of Harare, preceding the burials.
Survivors recounted harrowing tales. Chance Siyamavhu, 45, chillingly recalled their desperate pleas to the ferry driver to turn back as the vessel began to take on water almost immediately after departure. “Thank God that a wave pushed the sinking vessel and we managed to climb on top,” Siyamavhu told Agence France-Presse. He added, “When the boat capsized, most of the people scrambled to get the lifejackets but most of them did not even know how to use them.
