The fragile peace between Washington and Tehran has shattered, plunging the region back into uncertainty as the US Iran conflict reignites. President Donald Trump, speaking from a NATO summit in Turkey, emphatically declared the ceasefire agreement “over” following a volley of overnight strikes.
“We hit them very hard last night,” Trump asserted to reporters, hinting at more military action. He lambasted Iran’s leadership with colorful language, labeling them “scum” and “cuckoo” and accusing Tehran of flagrantly breaching an interim deal. This June-signed memorandum of understanding aimed to halt hostilities, promising a 60-day truce.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi swiftly retorted via social media, stating, “We do not answer vulgarity with vulgarity, but with action: fearlessly and with great valour.” This marked a stark escalation, with Tuesday night seeing the most intense exchanges since the MoU was inked.
Escalation in the US Iran Conflict
The 14-point agreement had stipulated a ceasefire period for ongoing negotiations, safe passage for vessels through the critical global shipping route, and the lifting of US sanctions on Iran. Yet, the past few days witnessed its rapid unravelling. Trump dismissed further talks as “a waste of time,” despite later suggesting any renewed “Iran war” would be “over quickly.”
US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed “powerful” strikes in response to attacks on three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian state media reporting casualties in southern Iran. Washington further tightened the screws by revoking its temporary suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil. Unsurprisingly, Tehran responded in kind, claiming strikes on US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.
NATO chief Mark Rutte deemed American strikes “absolutely necessary,” attributing blame to Iran for “basically violating the ceasefire.” Oil prices, predictably, saw an immediate spike, reflecting heightened market anxiety over the intensifying US Iran conflict, though still below previous peaks. Centcom maintains a significant naval presence, with over 20 US Navy warships patrolling Middle Eastern waters. Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf condemned the US for breaching the MoU on multiple fronts, including oil sanctions and “violating Iranian adjustments in the Strait.” “The era of bullying and extortion is over,” he proclaimed, amidst the deepening US Iran conflict.
