End of ‘VIP Cell’ Life After Revanna Jail Raid
For nearly two years, Prajwal Revanna had enjoyed separate accommodation within the jail, a stark contrast to the conditions faced by most inmates. He will now share a space with approximately 20 other prisoners and utilize common sanitation facilities, a significant shift confirmed by a senior Home Department official. His daily routine has been entirely revamped: he is now required to wear the standard jail uniform and has been assigned duties within the prison library. Prior to this, Revanna reportedly had an undertrial prisoner, Pratap Roy, facing a POCSO case, acting as his de facto assistant.
The existence of “VIP cells” at Parappana Agrahara has long been a subject of controversy. These informal arrangements, which provide privileges such as separate rooms, superior furnishings, external food, private cooking amenities, and easier visitor access, are not officially recognized categories within the prison system. They merely highlight a systemic issue where influence can circumvent standard penal regulations, raising critical questions about India’s correctional facilities.
Prison System Under Intense Scrutiny
The discovery of the mobile phone and pen drive has cast a long shadow over the prison’s security apparatus. Jail Superintendent Anshukumar has been tasked with explaining the egregious lapse that allowed the devices to reach Revanna. Furthermore, Assistant Superintendent Iranna Rangapur has been summarily suspended for alleged dereliction of duty. Prisons and Correctional Services DGP Alok Kumar has wasted no time, ordering a thorough probe to be led by DIG Jinendra Khangavi.
The confiscated items, including a blue Redmi 5G phone, its charger, and a black SanDisk pen drive, are now central to the inquiry. The investigation aims to pinpoint the exact entry mechanism of these devices, ascertain the duration of Revanna’s access, and crucially, determine if any prison staff facilitated their acquisition. DGP Kumar, quoted by the Hindustan Times, emphasized the gravity of the situation: “Despite all this security, how did a mobile phone get into the jail? We will investigate whether the officials were involved in this… How long has he been using the mobile phone? We have also been instructed to find out who is involved in this.”
This is not the first time Revanna has been warned. According to Alok Kumar, the former MP had previously been cautioned regarding adherence to prison regulations. Kumar also noted that other high-profile inmates, such as actor Darshan, had their cells searched without any prohibited devices being found. The ongoing inquiry is poised to uncover the full extent of this breach and identify all complicit parties within the prison administration.
