A recent Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank village of Qusra has forced a dozen Palestinian households from their properties, exacerbating the already severe issue of Palestinian displacement in the region. This dramatic intervention followed days of a harrowing siege by Israeli settlers, who had cut off essential power and water supplies to several homes.
Residents of three homes, belonging to the Abu Ridi and Hassan families, were initially targeted by the settlers. The situation escalated when the Israeli military declared Qusra a closed military zone, with Qusra Mayor Abdel Azim Wadi reporting that vacated Palestinian houses were being repurposed as barracks for Israeli forces. Intriguingly, the military stated its aim was ‘to protect the residents’ during an operation to remove Israeli settlers.
An Israeli spokesperson denounced the settlers’ actions as ‘deplorable’ and ‘unacceptable,’ promising investigations and arrests. However, the incident casts a stark light on a disturbing trend: the rapid and unchecked expansion of settlements under the current Israeli government has seemingly emboldened settlers, leading to a significant surge in violence aimed at dislodging Palestinians from their ancestral lands. It’s crucial to recall that under international legal consensus, all such settlements are illegal.
The Dire Reality of Palestinian Displacement in the West Bank
The ordeal in Qusra extends beyond the initial besieged families. Qaher Odeh, another resident, recounted soldiers entering his home, instructing him and his brother to leave what they declared a military post. ‘We left and kept walking down towards the lower part of the neighbourhood. Shortly afterwards, they sealed off the entire area,’ Odeh stated, detailing how many people were forcibly removed. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later confirmed dismantling two ‘illegal outposts’ and detaining one Israeli on the outskirts of Qusra and Jalud near Nablus.
The events in Qusra originated when settlers blocked roads and severed utilities. Shockingly, initial reports indicated that some Israeli soldiers at the scene were observed praying with the settlers – an act for which the military later vowed disciplinary action. This incident, alongside a previous mosque arson attack and the surrounding of another Palestinian home in Jalud, paints a grim picture of systematic targeting.
The humanitarian impact is staggering. UN figures reveal that 76 Palestinians, including 18 children, have been killed this year by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank. The broader phenomenon of Palestinian displacement continues to ravage communities; since January 2023, 127 Palestinian communities have faced full or partial displacement, affecting over 6,390 individuals. In 2026 alone, approximately 3,800 Palestinians, nearly half of them children, have been displaced due to settler violence, demolitions, and evictions. Despite these alarming statistics and the clear international legal framework, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, adamantly dismissed the notion of settlements as an impediment to peace, asserting their right to exist and grow.
