A seismic tremor has rattled the revered grounds of Ayodhya. Following the dramatic arrest of eight individuals implicated in the alleged pilfering and misappropriation of devotees’ sacred offerings at the Ram Temple, the Visva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has issued a resounding call for a comprehensive Champat Rai probe. Alok Kumar, the VHP International President, emphatically stated on Friday that the former General Secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Champat Rai, must also be brought under the investigative lens.
Calls for Broader Champat Rai Probe
Speaking with palpable conviction to CNN-News18, Kumar asserted that the ambit of the ongoing inquiry cannot, under any circumstances, be confined solely to the eight already apprehended. “The FIR itself indicates that beyond these eight, others warrant investigation,” he clarified, adding, “In my considered opinion, Champat Rai absolutely should be investigated.” He was swift to underscore that Rai, despite his prominent role, does not represent the VHP.
Earlier the very same day, in a move that sent ripples through religious and political circles, Rai stepped down from his pivotal position as General Secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. This resignation came hot on the heels of grave allegations concerning the theft and illicit diversion of substantial cash and invaluable offerings entrusted by devout pilgrims to the holy Ram Temple. Reports from various media outlets suggest that Rai’s departure was intended to facilitate an unimpeded and impartial investigation, though it’s crucial to note that no direct personal accusations have been leveled against him at this juncture.
The arrests, a direct consequence of a preliminary report furnished by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Uttar Pradesh government, occurred on Thursday night. The SIT’s findings unearthed alleged embezzlement of temple donations, prompting swift action. Among those now under arrest is Tinnu Yadav, a figure who formerly served as Rai’s driver. Yadav is believed to have been intricately involved in temple affairs subsequent to the sacred consecration of the Ram Lalla idol. The entire affair underscores the urgent need for stringent financial oversight, particularly concerning public donations, a topic often discussed in broader discussions around national governance and transparency.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, addressing a public gathering in Deoria on Friday, emphatically declared that police action against those accused of malfeasance began without delay after the SIT submitted its findings. “All eight individuals named in the FIR were arrested last night,” Adityanath affirmed, delivering a stern warning: “Anyone found guilty will not be spared.” The Chief Minister also voiced concern over what he termed attempts by certain political factions to exploit this sensitive issue, aiming to tarnish Ayodhya’s image and wound the sentiments of Ram devotees.
