In a horrifying escalation, an Israeli air raid on a home in central Gaza has tragically claimed the lives of an entire family, including a six-month-old infant. This devastating Gaza attack unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, marking another grim chapter in the persistent violence that continues to plague the besieged Palestinian territory, despite a U.S.-brokered “ceasefire” established last year.
Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah received the bodies of Mohammad Abu Mallouh, his wife Alaa Zaqlan, and their child, Osama. The apartment in the Nuseirat refugee camp bore the brunt of the strike, leaving a trail of destruction and at least 10 injured individuals, according to medical personnel on the ground. Israeli authorities have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
Persistent Gaza Attack and Escalating Casualties
Since the October ceasefire, Israel has maintained a pattern of near-daily assaults across Gaza. Health authorities within the enclave report that these continued operations have resulted in nearly 900 fatalities. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, described scenes of mass displacement on Sunday, with residents desperately fleeing bombing, clutching mattresses and meager personal belongings.
Further compounding the humanitarian crisis, Israeli forces were also observed demolishing homes and critical civilian infrastructure in eastern Gaza. These actions occurred behind Israel’s “Yellow Line,” a designation for military zones and buffer areas within the territory. Air raids also targeted Deir el-Balah, inflicting substantial damage near a local hospital.
The Gaza Government Media Office recently documented a staggering 2,400 Israeli violations within the first six months of the ceasefire alone. This count includes over 1,100 air raids and at least 921 separate shootings aimed at civilians. These figures underscore the precarious nature of the supposed calm.
The human cost of this protracted conflict is immense. More than 72,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since the outset of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, data that Israeli officials broadly acknowledged as accurate in January, following initial skepticism. Just Saturday, another Gaza attack killed five police officers and a 13-year-old boy.
Talks between Israel and Hamas, intended to forge a lasting peace, remain deadlocked. Both factions accuse each other of undermining the ceasefire. While Israel points to Hamas’s refusal to disarm as a primary impediment, the Palestinian group cites ongoing violations and severe restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza as reasons for the stalled negotiations. Indeed, more than six months post-ceasefire, the territory’s dire humanitarian situation remains in profound peril, as highlighted by human rights organizations.
