The United States military has initiated a series of Iran airstrikes across southern regions of the country, marking a dramatic escalation in an already fraught relationship. Explosions rocked multiple locations early Tuesday, stirring fears of a widening conflict in the critical Strait of Hormuz corridor.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the commencement of these strikes. They state the actions are a direct consequence of “Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”
Escalating Tensions: The Latest Iran Airstrikes
Iranian state media concurrently reported a flurry of blasts. The southern port city of Sirik, Qeshm Island, and Bandar Abbas bore witness to these unsettling events. Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi, reporting from Tehran, detailed the chaos: “Six explosions have been heard on the island of Qeshm which is the largest island in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz, with very geostrategic significance.” He added, “At least seven explosions have been heard in the areas close to Sirik Port, another strategic point from which Iran imposes its control.”
This current flashpoint follows a period of “limited confrontation and escalation” since a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in June. The MoU, intended to de-escalate the broader US-Israel “war” on Iran, sought to lift a US naval blockade in exchange for Tehran reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz.
In a move widely seen as incendiary, the US Treasury Department on Tuesday abruptly revoked a temporary suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil, barely three weeks after the MoU’s signing. This decision rescinded a license that had permitted Iran to produce, sell, and deliver crude oil until August 21. This reversal came swiftly after multiple vessel attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. A Qatari tanker ignited off Oman’s coast after an “unknown projectile” struck it on Monday. A Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker also sustained damage from missiles reportedly fired by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
US officials swiftly condemned Iran’s actions, labeling attacks on vessels in the Strait as “wholly unacceptable” and promising severe consequences. Iran’s foreign ministry, for its part, asserted its right to take any necessary measures to safeguard national interests and security. They also directly blamed the US government for violating the June MoU.
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, publicly denounced the US actions on social media. He stated, “The United States’ action in revoking the waiver for the exemption of sanctions on Iran’s oil sales constitutes a blatant violation of Article 10, and the subsequent military operations… also constitute a serious violation of Articles 1 and 2 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.” He further accused the US of “repeatedly” breaching the agreement, citing Israeli attacks and hostile rhetoric. The latest Iran airstrikes intensify these accusations.
