PATNA – Chaos erupted at Patna’s Pataliputra Railway Station over the weekend as hundreds of exam aspirants clashed violently with police, demanding additional train services for a crucial competitive examination. The dramatic Patna railway clash saw tracks blocked for hours, culminating in police using tear gas and firing warning shots to disperse the agitated crowd.
The disturbance began Saturday night, fueled by allegations of insufficient transportation arrangements for the Sunday examination. Aspirants, desperate to reach their designated centers, converged on the station, obstructing railway lines and disrupting scheduled services. Railway Protection Force Inspector General Amresh Kumar, overseeing the East Central Zone, confirmed that over 200 young men participated, steadfastly refusing to clear the tracks even after authorities arranged an additional train around 2 AM.
Escalation of the Patna Railway Clash
Attempts by security personnel to de-escalate the situation spiraled into violence. Protesters reportedly pelted stones at both police and railway officials. In response, law enforcement resorted to a lathi-charge, deployed tear gas shells, and fired warning shots into the air to regain control and restore order. The scenes were reminiscent of past youth agitations over public services, highlighting persistent infrastructure challenges.
Normal train operations gradually resumed around 3 AM. So far, six individuals have been apprehended, with ongoing efforts to identify more participants using extensive CCTV footage. While several security personnel and officials sustained minor injuries from the stone-pelting, authorities confirmed no passengers were harmed, and no railway property suffered significant damage during the overnight Patna railway clash.
Jitendra Rana, IG for Patna Zone, assured reporters that an FIR would be lodged, and those involved in the vandalism would face legal consequences. Echoing concerns about the unrest, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav expressed disappointment, urging youngsters to maintain decorum even in challenging circumstances.
